Brewery Gulch Inn
Issue No. 7, Late Winter/Early Spring, 2007
Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare
Time for Romance
Top Ten Reasons I Love You
New Love Nest Package

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Just as the salvaged redwood helped shape the design of the Brewery Gulch Inn, so the sentiments in Shakepeare’s 116th Sonnet helped shape the intent of the Inn: the intent to create an atmosphere for Romance every single day of the year.

And why, besides its sheer beauty, has this particular Sonnet continued to inspire us? Two reasons jump out.

First, the Sonnet alludes to the affection and trust that true love—“the marriage of true minds”—catalyzes for all of us, the “ever-fixed mark” called love that stays constant in spite of life’s changes. And, second, the Sonnet acknowledges the very real challenges to love, “when it alteration finds” and when it encounters “the remover.”  So the sentiments are not just touchy-feely, they also remind us: Love and Romance are wonderful, spontaneous feelings—and they require maintenance, renewal, courage and even work: the need to grow and to grow together where we can.

To us at Brewery Gulch, those needs inspire a love nest, a place that can engage all five senses in a renewal experience for you and for the love of your life. A place that might facilitate some of “love’s field work” that “the marriage of true minds” requires: a quiet talk, a sharing of dreams, a walk holding hands, a sharing of local wines and fine hors d’oeuvres (and “enough,” as Sunset Magazine recently said, “to convince you to blow off dinner plans and focus on your sweetheart!”), a look together at the Great Pacific as a winter storm looms offshore, an occasion to say I’m glad you were born on your lover’s birthday, or a pause to celebrate your meeting or marriage anniversary. Or just a good get-away, a reminder: I go, my love, where you go, there is nothing and no one more important to me.

And so Thank You, again, for helping us even attempt to make “the greatest love poem” come alive today. All of us at Brewery Gulch Inn wish you and yours the happiest Valentine’s Day, today, tomorrow, and every day.

Mendocino bluffsLeave the stresses of your daily life behind and escape for a romantic interlude to Mendocino. Surrounded by the spectacular natural beauty of redwood forests and the Pacific Ocean, you can enjoy the early signs of spring as you hike the bluffs and beaches taking in the breathtaking ocean views and the migration of the whales. Explore the Botanical Gardens, where the rhododendrons are popping right now and through May, or spend some time bird watching the many varieties seen in the area. Wander through the historic village during this quieter time of the year and discover the small shops and galleries. Enjoy a candlelight dinner at one of the area’s restaurants. Toast each other while visiting one of Anderson Valley’s many winery tasting rooms. Return each day to the comfort of Brewery Gulch Inn to continue your romantic adventure. Curl up with your partner in front of the fireplace in your room during the occasional blustery storms or sip a complimentary glass of wine while planning your next day’s adventure in front of the Great Room’s stunning hand-forged, wood-burning steel fireplace.
